Effects of Dehydration on Cricket Performance

Dehydration, or the excessive loss of body water, can have a multitude of adverse effects on cricket players, ranging from decreased physical endurance to impaired cognitive function. We play cricket in the summer, so it’s going to be hot, you are going to sweat, this puts cricketers at a huge risk of becoming dehydrated.

Research has shown that even mild dehydration can lead to decreased physical endurance. A mere 2% loss of body weight due to dehydration can result in a 20% decrease in physical performance.

Dehydration can compromise these cognitive abilities, leading to reduced concentration, slower reaction times, and impaired decision-making on the field.

Dehydration can also increase the likelihood of muscle cramps and injuries, posing a significant threat to a player's performance and overall well-being. When the body is dehydrated, the risk of muscle fatigue and cramping rises, potentially leading to decreased mobility and agility, which are essential for success in cricket.

To combat dehydration, like most things in life preparation is key. Ensure you have plenty of water packed (3+ Litres) as well as hydralytes. I would have 1 hydralyte pre game, 1 at lunch and 1 post game at a bare minimum.
